Read Mapeo
Read is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Botswana, where he teaches structural geology and tectonics (PhD from Southampton University). He is the co-editor of the Journal of African Earth Sciences. He began his career with the Botswana Geological Survey where he worked as a mapping geologist for many years.

CO-CONVENORS

Alexander Proyer
Alex is a petrologist with research focus on (ultra) high-pressure metamorphism. Originally from Austria (PhD from University of Salzburg), he is now Professor of Petrology at the University of Botswana since 2013 and expanding his research to include the geology of southern Africa as well as kimberlites and diamond formation.

Martin Roberts
Martin is the Geology Lead at Debswana Diamond Mining Company based in Gaborone, Botswana, and oversees the geology discipline at the Jwaneng, Orapa, Damtshaa and Letlhakane mines. He has extensive experience in exploration and mining diamond geology, and has a PhD from Cambridge in Volcanology/Igneous Petrology.

Barbara Scott Smith
Barbara is an independent consultant in kimberlite geology for world-wide diamond exploration and mining projects and also offers opportunities to learn about kimberlites through Scott-Smith Petrology Inc. She is Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia. In 2003 she co-convened the 8th International Kimberlite Conference in Canada and is a member of the International Kimberlite Conference Advisory Committee.

HONORARY CONVENOR

John Gurney
John is Chairperson of Mineral Services of the MS Group of businesses. His specialty is the geochemistry of diamond indicator minerals and the diamond potential of kimberlites, as well as the evaluation of macrodiamonds and microdiamonds. He is also an Emeritus Professor of Geochemistry at the University of Cape Town where he was the Head of the Kimberlite Research Group. John co-convened the 1st and 7th International Kimberlite Conferences in South Africa and is a member of the International Kimberlite Conference Advisory Committee.
